Dr Mary Clarke

Dr Mary Clarke was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in January 2001 as the Consultant Psychiatrist with responsibility for the addiction unit. In 2007 she took up a new consultant post with a special interest in psychosis. A graduate of University College Dublin, she completed her basic clinical training on the Saint John of God Rotational Scheme in Psychiatry. In 1998 she completed a two year MD research fellowship. Dr Clarke's research focused on the duration of untreated psychosis associated with the major psychotic disorders of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and its effects on outcome. She then completed specialist clinical training on the National Rotation for Higher Psychiatric Training. Her current research interests are in early intervention in psychosis and in suicide. She is a Member of the International Early Psychosis Association and Chairperson of the Saint John of God Adult Mental Health Research Committee.

Dr Cian Denihan

Dr Cian Denihan graduated from University College Dublin in 1989. He successfully completed his training in psychiatry with the Saint John of God Rotational Scheme in Psychiatry, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1994. He subsequently worked as Special Lecturer in Psychiatry, University College Dublin Department of Psychiatry and Saint John of God Hospital and then spent several years engaged in psychiatry research. He returned to University College Dublin in 1998 when he took up the post of Consultant Psychiatrist at the Student Health Service. Dr Denihan pursued his interest in liaison psychiatry in the area of rehabilitation medicine at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, providing an inpatient and outpatient psychiatry liaison service for individuals suffering from neurological injury and/or disease and those undergoing rehabilitation for serious physical disability. He returned to Saint John of God Hospital in 2007 where he works in general adult psychiatry, in addition to his other clinical commitments. Dr Denihan's special interest areas are young adult mental health and the psychiatric sequelae of serious physical injury, neurological disease, and other physically disabling conditions.

Dr Abbie Lane

Dr Abbie Lane was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in 1996. A graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1984 and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 1990. She commenced her clinical training on the St. John of God Rotational Training Scheme in Psychiatry before taking up a research fellow position funded by the Health Research Board and thereafter completed her specialist training on the National Rotation for Higher Psychiatric Training. In addition to her general adult psychiatric inpatient work, she carries specific responsibility for the development of the Dublin County Stress Clinic services with the support of a team of therapists, providing a specialised outpatient service for the assessment and treatment of recent onset stress related illness. Dr Lane has published nationally and internationally and is the current postgraduate medical tutor at the Hospital. In 2006 she co-edited "Understanding Mental Health" a general guide to mental health published by Blackhall Press.

Dr Terence Larkin

Dr Terence Larkin graduated from University College, Dublin in 1977. He commenced training in psychiatry in Saint Vincent's University Hospital and Saint John of God Hospital, becoming a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1982. He undertook further postgraduate training in the University of Toronto and subsequently as a senior registrar in Oxford. He has undertaken extensive psychotherapy training including group analysis (Institute of Group Analysis, London). He was appointed in 1988 to a consultant post in Saint John of God Hospital where he has been involved in providing general adult psychiatric services, with a special interest in anorexia nervosa, ECT and psychological/systemic interventions in adult psychiatry. He is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Irish Institute of Group Analysis and is on the European Register of Psychotherapists.

Dr Bernadette Mangan

Dr Bernadette Mangan was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in April 2001 as a general adult Consultant Psychiatrist supporting the work of all consultant teams in providing continuity of cover during leave periods. Her considerable experience gained in training and practice in both adult and child and adolescent mental health services over the years, brought a unique skill set to this challenging full-time role, providing a continuity of care for all our inpatients at consultant led level. A graduate of University College Dublin in 1975, Dr Mangan's subsequent training secured her membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1981. Dr Mangan is a trained family therapist and psychotherapist, qualifying in May 1985, with significant expertise working with children and adults in group, family and couples. In addition to Dr Mangan's assessment work within the Dublin County Stress Clinic her areas of special interest include psychiatric illness and the family and young adult mental health. Dr Mangan currently holds the position of Clinical Director, a post she was appointed to in 2008.

Dr David McNamara

Dr David McNamara was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in May 2005 as a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist to provide the clinical lead for the Adolescent Inpatient Unit. A graduate of University College Dublin, he completed his basic clinical training on the Eastern Health Board Rotational Scheme in Psychiatry. His specialist training was completed at the Maudsley Hospital London, where he took up his first consultant post. His research and special interests include disorders of adolescence, with a particular focus on early onset psychosis, tic disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders.


Dr Colin O'Gara

Dr Colin O'Gara is the consultant with responsibility for the addiction unit. He was previously Clinical Research Fellow at the National Addiction Centre, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. He leads the multidisciplinary clinical and research activities in addiction sciences including the 28 day group therapy programme, population genetic studies, addiction epidemiology and relapse prevention studies. He completed postgraduate psychiatric clinical training at the Maudsley Hospital, London where he was also prominent in training doctors for postgraduate psychiatric examinations. He has published many research reports and other articles in international scientific journals in the addictions field. He is a graduate of University College Cork, and was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in January 2007.

Dr Rory Shelley

Dr Rory Shelley was appointed to Saint John of God Hospital in January 1988 as a general adult Consultant Psychiatrist and over the years has gained considerable experience and developed a special interest in psychiatry of old age. His expertise in this area of sub-specialty is in the management of the psychiatric and behavioural consequences of senile dementia with the support of a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Working in partnership with the psychiatry of later life services within the public sector in South County Dublin, has undoubtedly provided access for patients to the continuum of expertise at inpatient and community level most appropriate to their needs. Dr Shelley's interest in psychopharmacology is evidenced through his membership of the European College of Neuro Psychopharmacology and the British Association of Psychopharmacology.A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, he completed his basic clinical training on the Saint John of God Rotational Scheme in Psychiatry and specialist clinical training on the National Rotation for Higher Psychiatric Training in Ireland. Dr Shelley is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists awarded in 1997.
