Psychosis

Psychosis is one of the most disabling of the major psychiatric disorders. It affects men and women from all social classes and racial backgrounds. Over the years, our hospital has specialised in research into psychosis.

Research

The Saint John of God Research Unit has gained national and international recognition for its work attracting grants from the Irish Health Research Board and the results have been presented by our medical staff at conferences and meetings in this country and abroad.

The expertise of the hospital consultant staff is recognised nationally. This is confirmed by the increasing referral of patients to them by doctors seeking a further expert opinion. The results of research findings have shaped our assessment procedures and treatment plans.

Assessment and Treatment

The good news is that various treatment options are available to assist people suffering from psychotic disorders at Saint John of God Hospital. Programmes provide comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for people with all forms of psychotic disorders.

Our highly specialised teams are multi-disciplinary in nature and comprise consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, registered nurses, therapists and chaplains.

To minimise the effects, which this disabling disorder has on people, our hospital places emphasis on early intervention and treatment as well as the education of the patients and their families.

A programme for rehabilitation is a vital part of treatment. The support of family members is also vital for the recovery and rehabilitation of patients of psychosis.
