Researchers from the pharmacy team at St John of God University Hospital, in collaboration with St Vincent’s University Hospital, University College Dublin, international experts, and people with lived experience, have developed new evidence-based guidelines for the use of metformin to help prevent weight gain caused by antipsychotic medications.
Advanced Specialist Pharmacists Aoife Carolan MSc MPharm MPSI and Caroline Hynes-Ryan MSc MPharm MPSI represented St John of God University Hospital in this work, which forms part of the PROGRESS research group led by Prof. Brian O’Donoghue, Professor of Psychiatry at UCD. These guidelines aim to support clinicians and service users in managing one of the most common and distressing side effects of antipsychotic treatment. The development of these guidelines reflects a commimtment to compassionate, patient-centred mental health care through research and collaboration.
