Admissions Process

Check-In and Registration

At St John of God Hospital, we prioritise a seamless and respectful admission process. Our dedicated Admission Officer will coordinate the referral with the relevant consultant and schedule the admission date.

Arrival and Initial Procedures

Upon arrival, patients will be directed by Reception or Security to the Admissions Office to provide necessary administrative information, consent to a photograph, and sign required forms. An information pack will be provided before they leave the Admissions Office.

Those Accompanied by Family

Patients may be accompanied to the ward by family members during admission. Our Admissions staff will ensure they are escorted to their designated ward after completing the initial process.

Ward Admission

Upon reaching the ward, patients will wait in the designated area while the Admission Officer hands over their notes to the Nursing Office. The Nurse in Charge or nursing staff will be informed of their arrival.

Introduction to Nursing Staff

Patients will meet their admitting nurse who will complete the admission process, including:

  • Showing the patient to their room.

  • Completing a property inventory for items brought by the patient.

  • Securely handling sharps, medications, and large sums of money.

Mobile Phone Access

Patients are generally allowed to use mobile phones and chargers, with exceptions on St Peter's and St Camillus wards due to specific ward profiles.

Orientation and Initial Health Check

The admitting nurse will:

  • Conduct a tour of the ward.

  • Take vital signs and perform other necessary checks as part of the physical screening.

  • Introduce the patient to other nursing staff on duty.

  • Inform patients about regular night checks by nursing staff using torches.

Patient Assessment and Observation

The admitting nurse will conduct an interview to assess the patient's presentation, reasons for admission, and level of risk. All patients are initially placed on GC1 level observation, meaning they must stay on the ward and will be checked hourly.

Medical Evaluation

The patient will be seen by the admitting doctor, who may be part of their treatment team or the on-call doctor for the day. If both the doctor and nurse are available simultaneously, their assessments may occur together.

Medication Management

Patients will typically be prescribed their regular medication upon admission, with verification by the pharmacy and their GP or local pharmacy the following morning.

Consultant Review

Patients will see their treating consultant within 24 hours of admission, unless admitted over a weekend or Bank Holiday, in which case they will be seen by the on-call consultant.

At St John of God Hospital, our admission process is designed to ensure patients receive compassionate and efficient care from the moment they arrive.
