Patient Safety & Policies

At St John of God Hospital, our top priority is maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients and staff.

Patient Searches

In certain situations, it may be necessary to conduct a search of a patient, their belongings, or the environment in which they are accommodated. These searches are only initiated when absolutely necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the hospital.

  • Clear Communication: If a search is required, you will be fully informed of the reasons behind the search and what the process will involve. Our staff are committed to transparency and will ensure you understand every step.

  • Consent and Safety: Whenever possible, our staff will seek your written consent before proceeding with a search. However, if there is a significant and immediate risk to your safety or the safety of others, staff may conduct a search without consent. Rest assured, any search conducted will be carried out with the utmost respect for your privacy, dignity, and gender.

  • Your Rights and Support: If you have any concerns or require further information about the search process, please speak with a member of your Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). They are here to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Patient Observation

St John of God Hospital is dedicated to fostering a positive, recovery-focused therapeutic environment. We employ an open and patient-centred model of treatment and care that empowers everyone on their journey to recovery.

  • Personalised Assessment: Every patient is carefully assessed by their MDT to determine the most appropriate level of observation based on their unique needs and circumstances. This personalised approach ensures that you receive the care and attention that best supports your recovery.

  • Access to Information: Detailed information about your observation level is readily available. An information leaflet and DVD are provided on your suite, offering clarity on what your observation level entails. Should you have any questions or need additional information, the nursing staff on your suite is always available to assist you.

Data Protection

We prioritise your privacy. Our patient information system is fully computerised and adheres to the Data Protection Act 1988, ensuring your personal information is handled securely.

Safety Protocols: Fire Drill and Fire Alarm Testing

  • Fire Drills: Conducted regularly to familiarise everyone with the proper safety procedures, including the evacuation process for the inpatient suite or hospital.

  • Fire Alarm Testing: Weekly tests ensure the alarms and automatic fire doors function correctly. Patients are not required to evacuate during tests unless explicitly instructed by staff.

Smoking Policy

In compliance with the Tobacco Smoking (Prohibition) Regulations 2003, smoking is permitted only in clearly marked areas on each floor. Smoking outside designated areas is strictly prohibited, and the use of e-cigarettes is restricted to these zones.

Pet Policy

Only approved pet therapy animals are allowed within the hospital premises, ensuring a therapeutic environment for all patients. You can learn more about our animal therapy sessions here
